The Academy hosted twenty American PhD students selected to participate in the 2009 East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes (EAPSI) Summer Program, run by the Academy and the US National Science Foundation (NSF). The orientation session, held 22-24 June, was the beginning of the students’ eight week stay in Australia, during which they will undertake a research project at an Australian institution. The participants of the program come from a number of research areas, and are hosted by various institutions including universities, CSIRO divisions, museums, teaching hospitals and government institutions.

During the orientation session the students toured the National Museum of Australia and New Parliament House and attended Question Time in the House of Representatives. Dr Joe Hlubucek, Executive Director of the Australian-American Fulbright Commission, and Professor David Lindenmayer FAA of the Fenner School of Environment and Society at the Australian National University presented at the opening session.
