Activities | The dope on drug-impaired driving

  • National Institute on Drug Abuse (USA)
    • Mind over matter – students explore the brain’s response to a number of drugs including marijuana, opiates, inhalants, hallucinogens, nicotine and steroids. A teachers guide is available.
    • Drugs change the way neurons communicate – students learn how certain drugs interfere selectively with neurotransmission in the brain. Includes an in-class activity in which students investigate how a drug (caffeine) affects heart rate. (PDF files of the lesson plan and teaching masters are available.)

  • Science UPD8 (UK)
    • Cannabis – students use different ethical approaches to decide whether to legalise cannabis.

  • Discovery School (USA)
    • Safe driving – lesson plan in which students study the potential dangers, risks and statistics associated with a variety of road safety issues including impaired driving.

  • PE Central (USA)
    • Impaired – activity in which students explore how drugs and alcohol can impair their ability to perform tasks requiring manual dexterity.
