Australia must maintain strong collaborations in leading international science, and continue to maximise economic and social benefits from its global networks, according to Nobel Laureate Professor Brian Schmidt.
At an Australian Academy of Science and University of Melbourne event today, Professor Schmidt will be ‘In Conversation’ with the Academy’s Foreign Secretary and Federation Fellow, Professor Andrew Holmes. The event will be moderated by Professor Robyn Williams of the ABC Science Show.
“Part of Australia continuing to succeed in the rapidly evolving world of science and technology is looking beyond our borders to work cooperatively with colleagues overseas,” said Professor Schmidt.
The forum-style discussion will explore the scientists’ own work and illuminate the case for strategic investment and international engagement, building upon the Academy’s 2011 Position Paper, Australian science in a changing world: innovation requires global engagement.
Professors Schmidt, Holmes and Williams will highlight the increasing need to coordinate with the efforts of other nations to address the social, economic and environmental challenges and opportunities facing Australia and the world. .
