Science for a green economy: fresh ideas today and tomorrow

Commercialising conversion of organic waste to energy, achieving lowest cost transfer to
renewables, and adapting primary industries for climate change are among the solutionsAustralia’s top young scientists will offer the Science for a green economy conference in Sydney today and tomorrow.

Organised by the Australian Academy of Science from 2 – 4 December at the Menzies Hotelin Sydney, the event brings together by invitation only the best young Australian scientists to focus on how science can support a successful transition to a green economy.

Presentations include:

  • The process of greening China’s economy: Dr Chunbo Ma of the University of Western Australia will present at about 11.20 am.
  • Adapting primary industries for climate change: Dr Alistair Hobday of CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research will present at about 2.30 pm.
  • Decarbonising Australia’s electricity supply: Mr Ben Heard of Decarbonise SA and ThinkClimate Consulting will present at about 4.20 pm.
  • Alternative aviation fuels from gas and biomass feedstock: Dr Lucas Rye of Shell Company of Australia will present at about 10.30 am.
  • Harnessing native plants to produce more phosphorous efficient pasture crops:
    Associate Professor Megan Ryan of the University of Western Australia will present at about 12 noon.
  • Sustainable aquaculture as the fastest growing food-production sector: Dr Cedric Simon of the University of Tasmania will present at about 12.30 pm.
