The Academy welcomes changes to the Australian Government’s Ministry in December that saw the portfolio of the Minister for Industry, the Hon Ian Macfarlane MP, extended to include science, and the appointment of a Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Industry and Science, the Hon Karen Andrews MP.
The Academy’s President Professor Andrew Holmes AM PresAA FRS FTSE, Secretary Science Policy Professor Les Field AM FAA, Chief Executive Dr Sue Meek AO FTSE, and Director Science Policy and Projects Dr Chris Hatherly met with Mrs Andrews, who is a qualified engineer (one of a select group of parliamentarians with STEM training), soon after her appointment. The broad-ranging discussion with Mrs Andrews and her advisors covered a range of big issues for the future of Australian science education and research.
The Academy looks forward to maintaining a productive relationship with both Minister Macfarlane and Parliamentary Secretary Andrews.
