Sustainability Research and Innovation Congress, Finland

Future Earth Australia was represented at the recent Sustainability Research and Innovation Congress in Helsinki, Finland by manager Kate Nairn. Hosted by the Academy, Future Earth Australia is a national branch of Future Earth, a global sustainability, research and innovation network.

Included in the congress proceedings were two large annual events – the Belmont Forum Plenary and the Future Earth Assembly.

Future Earth Australia is the new Australian member organisation to the Belmont Forum, linking its network into large international collaborative research actions.

“Seeing researchers and national funding agencies from across the world work together to progress essential sustainability research was inspiring,” Ms Nairn said.

The Future Earth Assembly brought together representatives from Future Earth’s 9 Global Hubs, 20 National Committees and 27 Global Research Networks to share news and latest research and build community and collaboration across the network.

“Presence at these events showcases the talent and strength of Australian research in global arenas and keeps Australia up to date with global agendas and direction setting,” she said.

Update to Sustainable Cities and Regions

Future Earth Australia is also pleased to present its 2024 Update to Sustainable Cities and Regions: 10-year strategy for urban systems transformation

Australia is facing a multitude of urban challenges, reinforcing the need for a coherent national vision for its cities and regions. This update provides a pathway for governments to manage increasingly complex and interdependent urban challenges over the coming decade.

The project is the product of extensive national and cross-sector consultation, including city and regional workshops conducted in 2018 and 2019, and enhanced by a fresh round of consultations in the past 12 months.
