In January 2020, a severe hailstorm damaged the iconic copper roof of the heritage-listed Shine Dome, home of the Australian Academy of Science. A splendid new roof with 1888 custom-made new tiles is now in place.
To mark this historical event, the Academy has established the Celebrate Science campaign with the twin objectives of celebrating Australian scientists and their achievements, and strengthening the Academy’s ability to offer scientific advice, comment, and education in the national interest.
We ask that you celebrate science with us by dedicating a virtual copper roof tile to an Australian scientist who has made a significant contribution to science. Your donation will help the Academy continue to play an essential role as an independent voice for Australian science.

Not vaccinated? These are your odds of needing intensive care
As the pandemic continues, you may wonder why we’re seeing reports of more vaccinated than unvaccinated people in hospital, in intensive care units, or dying from COVID-19. This is known as a ‘high vaccination rates paradox’.
Winter boosters: what you need to know
As the days get colder, the number of COVID-19 cases are expected to rise. To reduce a potential winter peak of COVID-19, an additional vaccine booster dose is recommended for selected groups in Australia who are most vulnerable.
A patina finish is a surface change that has grown more beautiful with age (something many of us strive to do). Scientifically speaking, patina is the green or brown film that forms naturally on the surface of copper due to a series of chemical reactions.
The Australian Academy of Science has welcomed the new Albanese ministry.

Keep abreast of the Academy Fellowship in the Fellows update:
Gifts and legacies from Fellows and friends have helped the Australian Academy of Science to consolidate its independence.
Support given through general donations is directly responsible for strengthening the Academy’s core activities such as scientific meetings, advice to support policy development, publications, education, public awareness and outreach, international activities, awards and fellowships.
Each time you make a gift through our annual tax or special appeals, you help to make the Academy a vital, viable and visible presence in Australia and around the world.
