Professor Bill Levick was elected to the Academy in 1973 for his work on the neurophysiology of vision. He studied at the University of Sydney, then undertook clinical studies and was a Resident Medical Officer at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He received fellowships to further his research studies in Cambridge and California.
After spending time as Associate Research Physiologist at the University of California Berkeley he returned to Australia with a position as Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney. In 1967 he was appointed Professorial Fellow in Physiology at the John Curtin School of Medical Research at the Australian National University. He remained at the school, as head of the Vision Research Group, for the rest of his career.
Professor Levick was elected a Fellow of the Optical Society of America in 1977 and of the Royal Society in 1982. He was awarded the Centenary Medal in 2001. He gave his time generously to the Academy, serving on several committees, and also on the Joint Committee of the Royal Society, the Academy of Science and the Academy of Technical Sciences.
