Future trends panel: Innovation and connectivity in the metaverse

 

Join the Australian Academy of Science and Nokia, a Women in STEM Decadal Plan Champion, for a discussion on trends in innovation and technology, and how a diverse workforce is crucial to achieving the Australian Government’s target of 1.2 million tech-related jobs by 2030.

Hear from an all-female industry expert panel about the metaverse and interconnected realities, what the future of tech in Australia looks like, and how industry, government and academia can work together to achieve our tech goals in the future – including championing women in STEM and removing barriers for women to enter the workforce.

About the panellists

Leslie Shannon

Leslie Shannon is Nokia’s Head of Trend and Innovation Scouting. A Silicon Valley-based futurist, she focuses on identifying tech disruptions and opportunities for Nokia and its customers, including 5G-powered developments in robotics, drones, visual analytics, cloud gaming, and especially augmented and virtual reality – the foundations of the metaverse. Leslie has a BA from the University of Virginia and a master degree from Yale University.

Scarlett McDermott

Scarlett McDermott is Head of Ecosystem Capability at the Tech Council of Australia. She is an experienced technologist and leader, with expertise in software, cyber and product development. Scarlett has spent the last several years focused on solving problems of supply, diversity and training quality in the technology talent landscape in Australia, the UK and North America, and now heads up the Tech Council’s Digital Employment Forum driving towards a more diverse and robust tech talent landscape in Australia.

Anna-Maria Arabia

Anna-Maria Arabia is a strategic advocate for science, social justice, and diversity and inclusion. She has over 20 years’ experience in the science sector and is currently Chief Executive of the Australian Academy of Science. In this role, Anna-Maria has led significant reform in global science engagement and science policy matters, and in improving diversity and inclusion in science. She has held several senior executive positions in the science sector including CEO of Science and Technology Australia and Deputy Director at Questacon – the National Science and Technology Centre. 

Ebony Aitken

Ebony Aitken is Head of Government Affairs for Nokia Asia Pacific and Japan. In this role, she is responsible for Nokia’s strategy towards governments and industry stakeholders in the APJ region. She is a member of the Nokia Asia-Pacific and Japan and Oceania Leadership teams. Ebony has worked within corporate affairs for more than 15 years, across various sectors including telecommunications, mining, energy and major infrastructure projects.
