In its 63rd year Science at the Shine Dome will feature more than 40 extraordinary scientists from around Australia – and special international guests – in a fast-paced smorgasbord of new knowledge from across the scientific spectrum. The three-day festival of intellect will be topped off with the ‘Life on the loose’ symposium, which will bring together a diverse set of players in the fight to understand, eradicate or control invasive species in Australia and what the world has to learn from the giant ecological experiment taking place on our shores in real-time.
Our newest Academy Fellows are formally admitted into the Australian Academy of Science upon the signing of the Charter.
Please note this function is for Academy Fellows and their guests only. It will however be livestreamed and available on YouTube for those delegates who are interested.
During Science at the Shine Dome, a small number of outstanding scientists are admitted to the Academy, following a lengthy and exacting election process. These new Fellows are further put to the test by having to communicate their life’s work in just 10 minutes. All talks are pitched at a general science audience.
Each year about 15 researchers receive highly sought-after honours for outstanding achievements in early- and mid-career research or across a lifetime of work. Like the new Fellows, these awardees present their contemporaries with a short description of the cutting-edge work that led to their recognition.
This is a rare opportunity to hear from some of Australia’s highest achievers including potential future Nobel laureates. Past awardees include bionic ear inventor Professor Graeme Clark, Nobel laureate in physics Professor Brian Schmidt, and eminent immunologist Sir Gustav Nossal.
The ‘Life on the loose’ symposium will bring together a diverse set of players in the fight to understand, eradicate or control invasive species in Australia and what the world has to learn from the giant ecological experiment taking place on our shores in real-time. The symposium will feature prominent speakers Professor David Richardson, Professor Rick Shine, Dr Beth Cookson and others who will take us on a journal of why or how species were introduced, the point they became invasive, impacts they are having and the management controls being implemented.
