Academy Fellow Jan Anderson passes away

Fellows and staff of the Australian Academy of Science were saddened to hear of the passing of distinguished plant scientist and Fellow Jan Anderson.

Professor Anderson was an Adjunct Professor at the Research School of Biology at the Australian National University whose work focused on the molecular organisation of the photosynthetic membranes of higher plants and algae. She was elected to the Academy in 1987 served on the Academy's Council and committees, and was its Vice-President from 1992 to 1993.

She was also elected to the Royal Society in 1996, received the Lemberg Medal and Lecture from the Australian Biochemical Society in 1983, an Honorary Doctorate, from the University of UmeĆ„, Sweden in 1998 and a Centenary Medal in 2000.

In 2007, Jan also received the International Society of Photosynthesis Research Lifetime Achievement Award to acknowledge a lifetime of outstanding contributions to understanding photosynthesis.
