Academy Fellows elected to US Academy

The Australian Academy of Science today congratulated three Fellows on their election to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), the prestigious American organisation founded in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln.
Professor Chris Goodnow, Professor Graham Farquhar and Professor Peter Hall are among the 84 new members and 21 foreign associates elected to the NAS.

Professor Goodnow has been elected as a member and Professor Farquhar and Professor Hall are both new foreign associates.

Australian Academy of Science President Professor Suzanne Cory warmly congratulated them on their election.

“To be recognised by one of the world’s most esteemed scientific academies is a signal of great achievement,” Professor Cory said.

“The National Academy has been has been honouring the work of scientists for 150 years and I join my colleagues in offering my well-wishes to the newly elected members of this historic organisation.”

Professor Goodnow was recognised for his work in immunology at the John Curtin School of Medical Research at the Australian National University (ANU).

Professor Farquhar, also from the ANU in the College of Medicine, Biology and Environment was elected for his contributions to environmental biology and the study of plant physiology.

Professor Hall, an Australian Laureate Fellow in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Melbourne, was elected for his work specialising in statistics and probability.
The NAS membership of around 2200 members and 400 foreign associates, includes approximately 200 Nobel prize winners.
