Academy welcomes parliamentary group for women in science

June 20, 2012

Australian Academy of Science President Professor Suzanne Cory today welcomed the establishment of the new Parliamentary Friendship Group for Women in Science, Maths and Engineering.

“The Academy is pleased to support this new group and welcomes the non-partisan commitment from political leaders to promote and help enable women to pursue and maintain careers in science, maths and engineering,” Professor Cory said.

“While a significant proportion of those studying science and maths at university are women, by mid-career that number drops dramatically.

“We’re losing many of our nation’s best and brightest because we have failed to incorporate flexible and supportive career pathways for women scientists and mathematicians.

“By establishing such high-level advocacy for women in science, maths and engineering, parliamentarians are acknowledging that Australian cannot afford to keep losing women from the profession, or to under-utilising our investment in training them.”

The Parliamentary Friendship Group for Women in Science, Maths and Engineering will be launched at Parliament House today by co-Chairs, Kelly O’Dwyer MP and Amanda Rishworth MP.

“This group is a recognition that reversing the under-representation of women in science, maths and engineering – particularly at the higher levels – is an issue for all Australians,” Professor Cory said.
