Experts convene on science to underpin vision for Australia in 2050

July 26, 2011

Senior scientists and other experts from across the nation are coming together this week to consider what a realistic vision might be for a sustainable Australia in 2050 and beyond.

The Australian Academy of Science workshop, Australia 2050: Towards an Environmentally Sustainable and Socially Equitable Way of Living is being held in Bowral, NSW. Workshop participants – including over 30 leading scientists, social scientists and engineers from universities, government, industry and non-government sectors – will deliberate over the science that must underpin an ecologically, economically and socially sustainable Australia in 2050.

The workshop is the first phase of a three-year project by the Academy which is supported by a Learned Academies Special Project grant from the Australian Research Council.

Participants will examine a range of factors and constraints that must be taken into account in determining a sustainable biophysical and social operating space for Australia. They will consider how such systems are likely to evolve and identify critical decision points to which society and policy makers must respond.

This week’s workshop and subsequent efforts this year will result in a book to be published in early 2012.
