Science for a green economy: fresh ideas

November 30, 2012

Commercialising conversion of organic waste to energy, achieving lowest cost transfer to renewables, and adapting primary industries for climate change are among the solutions Australia’s top young scientists will offer the Science for a green economy conference in Sydney next week.

Organised by the Australian Academy of Science as part of the Australian Frontiers of Science conferences, the event brings together by invitation only the best young Australian scientists to discuss emerging technologies, new opportunities and cutting-edge advances in their fields.

The conference, being held on 2 – 4 December at the Menzies Hotel in Sydney, will focus on how science can support a successful transition to a green economy.

Innovative ideas and solutions are being discussed to address the climate, food and energy crises that face Australia and the world:

  • Decarbonising Australia’s electricity supply: Mr Ben Heard of Decarbonise SA and ThinkClimate Consulting
  • Alternative aviation fuels from gas and biomass feedstock: Dr Lucas Rye of Shell Company of Australia
  • Harnessing native plants to produce more phosphorous efficient pasture crops: Associate Professor Megan Ryan of the University of Western Australia
  • Sustainable aquaculture as the fastest growing food-production sector: Dr Cedric Simon of the University of Tasmania
