UK Chief Scientist at the Shine Dome: bringing science to the forefront of government policy

UK Government Chief Scientific Adviser, Professor Sir John Beddington will highlight how to bring science to the forefront of government policy, at an Australian Academy of Science public lecture at the Shine Dome today.

Sir John has made the ‘perfect storm’ of food, energy and water security in the context of climate change a priority for governments internationally.

During his tenure he has provided scientific advice to government through crises including the 2009 swine flu outbreak, the 2010 volcanic ash incident, the Fukushima disaster, and been responsible for increasing the UK’s scientific capacity by encouraging all major departments of state to recruit a Chief Scientific Adviser.
