We are now in our 50th Anniversary year. It is a time to reflect on the enormous contributions that science, and our scientists, have made to the well-being of all Australians. It is also a time to think about some of the daunting challenges ahead. For the nation to prosper, our science and technology base must also prosper. This seems so self-evident to us, but the Academy and its Fellowship must continue to promote this message not only to policy makers but also to the community more generally.
