The 2020 Dorothy Hill Medal and the 2021 Jaeger Medal recipients have been honoured at Government House in Hobart, while the 2021 Hannan Medal recipient was honoured at Government House in Adelaide.

Recipients of the Academy’s Premier and Career awards would usually be presented with their medals at the Science at the Shine Dome event in Canberra. This year, ceremonies were organised at government houses across the country, but due to the changing pandemic restrictions some state events were unfortunately cancelled.

In Hobart, Associate Professor Rebecca Carey from the University of Tasmania was awarded the 2020 Dorothy Hill Medal for her research in volcanology. She has contributed significantly to the understanding of eruption and hydrothermal processes on land and on the seafloor.

Professor John Church from UNSW Sydney was awarded the 2021 Jaeger Medal for his engagement in both theoretical and observational work on the dynamics of the oceans. He is one of Australia’s leading oceanographers.

Chair of the Tasmania Regional Fellows group, Dr Steve Rintoul, represented the Academy in a ceremony hosted and officiated by the Governor General of Tasmania, Her Excellency the Honourable Barbara Baker AC and her husband Emeritus Professor Don Chalmers AO.

Representatives from the Royal Society of Tasmania, the University of Tasmania, and the Australian Antarctic Division of the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment were in attendance, as well as Academy Fellows.

In Adelaide, Professor Mathai Varghese FAA was awarded the 2021 Hannan Medal for his highly influential contributions to the field of geometric analysis, which relates geometric, analytic and algebraic properties of possibly infinite dimensional manifolds.

Academy Fellow and Council Member, Professor Colin Raston, represented the Academy in a ceremony hosted and officiated by the Governor General of South Australia, Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC and her husband Mr Rod Bunten.

With Science at the Shine Dome not occurring in person in 2020 and 2021, the lectures ordinarily given by recipients have instead been presented online.

These lectures can be viewed on our website.
