Impact of COVID-19 on women in the STEM workforce in Pacific Alliance countries

Above: This is the recording of a webinar held at the 2021 launch of the report with Academy Fellow Professor Cheryl Praeger outlining the research project’s key findings. A panel discussion followed, hosted by Australia’s Women in STEM Ambassador Professor Lisa Harvey-Smith and featuring STEM experts Dr Judith Zubieta (National Autonomous University of Mexico), Hazami Habib (CEO Academy of Science Malaysia) and Professor Patricio Felmer (University of Chile).

The Australian Government Department of Education and the Australian Academy of Science invite you to join us for an expert discussion on how the pandemic is affecting the Women in STEM workforce in Australia and Pacific Alliance countries.

In 2021, the Australian Academy of Science published a snapshot of the dynamic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on women in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

The report was informed by close collaboration with regional partners, including perspectives from researchers in Pacific Alliance countries (Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru). The report revealed that the pandemic has exacerbated pre-existing gender inequity in the STEM workforce, warning that without action important gains in equality may be lost.

One year on, and with the report translated into Spanish for the first time, it is timely to explore how these trends have developed and what they mean for the future.

The webinar dialogue will explore what action is being undertaken to address these challenges and how we can collaborate to create greater opportunities for Women in STEM across the region.
