The Dome has been a much-loved feature of the Canberra landscape since its award-winning construction in 1959, and was National Heritage listed in 2005. Its modernist fittings and furnishings are timeless and elegant, and its spaces airy and retro-futuristic.
We will be hosting a range of activities in and around the Shine Dome, which will be open to the public between 9.30am and 2.30pm.
Fellows and staff of the Australian Academy of Science will be conducting tours and sharing fascinating secrets from the construction of the unique building to the present day. We will have a movie screening of ‘The Dish’ in the Ian Wark theatre, and will be finishing the day with ‘Dinner under the Dome’ in the Jaeger Room.
Food can be purchased onsite from a selection of local food vendors. We encourage you to pack a picnic blanket, bring your family and friends, and enjoy our gardens surrounding the Dome.

The Shine Dome is a short walk from the highly acclaimed New Acton Precinct, four hotels and the Australian National University, and within comfortable walking distance of tourist attractions, cafes, parking and city shops.
Limited parking is available in the Academy car park, accessible off Gordon Street between the Shine Dome and Marcus Clark Street.

To celebrate the Australian Academy of Science's 70th anniversary and the Shine Dome's 65th anniversary, we will be holding a special screening of ‘The Dish’ in the Ian Wark Theatre at the Shine Dome. The movie will be followed by a panel discussion with Mike Dinn and John Saxon, local Canberrans who were involved in beaming the moon landing to the world from Honeysuckle Creek in 1969.
‘The Dish’ is a comedy-drama based on Australia's involvement in the 1969 Apollo XI moon landing. A group of maverick scientists on a remote Australian sheep farm are the globe's only hope for obtaining the epic images of man's first steps on the moon.
Mike and John will join us on stage after the film to discuss the facts of the moon landing, Australia's involvement, and the parts of the movie that were fictionalised. The discussion will be facilitated by Professor Naomi McClure-Griffiths from ANU's Research School of Astronomy & Astrophysics.
