President of The Royal Society, Sir Paul Nurse, visited Australia in March to deliver the 2014 David Rivett Memorial Lecture at the CSIRO Discovery Centre, Canberra.
Following the lecture Sir Paul travelled to Melbourne to join a round table meeting chaired by Academy President Professor Suzanne Cory, and attended by Foreign Secretary Professor Andrew Holmes AM FAA FRS FTSE, President of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, Professor Alan Finkel AM, and other members of both academies.
The round table discussed the role of a central research institute in stimulating translational research, and the development of a national strategy to cover industry, research and development, and education. The meeting was followed by a dinner in honour of Sir Paul and his wife Lady Anne.
