The dome of the Shine Dome rises and falls by up to two centimetres with changes in temperature between night and day, which can be considerable in Canberra.

For this reason, the building’s architect Roy Grounds designed the building so that none of the internal structure touches the dome. Where they are connected, it is by soft joints so the dome is free to move.
