Immediate Past President of the Academy, Professor Suzanne Cory AC FAA FRS, will present this year’s prestigious Boyer Lectures.
Professor Cory is one of Australia’s most distinguished molecular biologists whose research has had a major impact on the understanding of immunology and the development of cancer. She will deliver the four-part lecture series on ‘The promise of science: a vision of hope’.
Each year, the ABC’s Boyer Lectures are given by prominent Australians on major social, scientific or cultural issues.
The 2014 Boyer Lecture series will be broadcast on ABC Radio National on Saturday 6, 13, 20 and 27 September at 1pm, and repeated at 8pm on Tuesdays.

Superconductivity has been around for more than 100 years. Researchers in this area have won six Nobel Prizes in physics, and a very large number of scientists and engineers are working in the research field.
In this lecture, Dr Cathy Foley will explain what we understand about this exciting but baffling property that many materials possess when they are cooled down past a critical temperature.
This lecture forms part of a series by distinguished researchers in chemical physics, in recognition of the contributions of the late Dr A L G Rees FAA to science, industry and education.

Professor Sir John Gurdon

The Academy will host a public lecture by Nobel Prize winner Professor Sir John Gurdon FRS on 27 September at 5.30 pm. Professor Gurdon will review the history of nuclear reprogramming of cells by various procedures and discuss what is known about the mechanisms involved.
Professor Gurdon will also be presenting a plenary lecture at ComBio 2014 in Canberra on 28 September – 2 October.

The Academy’s ‘Science Stars of Tomorrow’ public speaker series continued in July and August with talks by Associate Professor Bryan Fry on the evolution of venom and Dr Lisa Alexander on extreme climate events.
This thought-provoking series aims to bring the work of high achieving young scientists directly to the general public.
