The Academy has selected eight Australian early-career researchers to collaborate with scientists in research institutions in France in 2015 under the France–Australia Science Innovation Collaboration (FASIC) Grants early-career fellowships. Researchers were encouraged to apply from any field of food and agribusiness; mining equipment, technology and services; oil, gas and energy resources; medical technologies and pharmaceuticals; and advanced manufacturing. This activity is funded by the Department of Industry and Science.

2015 Rod Rickards Fellowships have been awarded to three researchers, who will travel to France to undertake research in chemistry or biology—Dr Brooke Coombes from the University of Queensland, Dr Daniel Johnstone from the University of Sydney and Dr Romana Stark from Monash University.
Dr Coombes will travel to the University of Nantes to work on quantifying tendon elasticity using shear wave dispersion analysis in healthy and diseased tendon; Dr Johnstone will visit the Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission (CEA) to understand how infrared light protects against Parkinson’s Disease; and Dr Stark will research how the brain senses the body’s needs and drives food intake at the Université Paris Diderot.
The fellowships were established in 2009 by the family of Professor Rod Rickards FAA, in memory of his important contributions to Australian science through his outstanding achievements in the chemistry of compounds of medical, biological, agricultural and veterinary importance.
