The Future Earth Australia project aims to build a holistic plan to position Australia as an environmentally, economically and socially sustainable nation. It will also enable Australia to connect with the initiatives of its global parent, Future Earth, an international platform with a shared vision for people to thrive in a sustainable and equitable world.
What distinguishes Future Earth Australia is the idea of co-design, co-production and co-implementation of projects with various stakeholder groups to offer solutions to the big sustainability challenges facing Australia. They include academia, government, NGOs and the private sector.
A three-pronged consultation strategy is driving the stakeholder engagement process: a web-based survey, co-design workshops and one-on-one interviews. The web-based survey has attracted 119 responses so far. Successful workshops were held in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra in November, and in Perth and Adelaide in December.
Feedback from the consultations will be collated to produce a plan for ‘Future Earth in Australia’. The plan will define the role of Future Earth Australia, propose a governance framework and highlight the distinguishing features of any possible projects.
