The Academy's much-loved science outreach website Nova: science for curious minds has been reimagined. The new Nova will be celebrated with an official launch event during National Science Week in August.
From humble beginnings in 1997, nearly half a million people have used Nova to find understandable answers to complex questions. Fast-forward 18 years and many things on the web have changed. In response to this, Nova has been transformed into a new, dynamic and interactive site filled with engaging topics, videos, interactive elements and infographics.
Nova has partnered with a German animation company, Kurz Gesagt (‘in a nutshell’) to make unique animations to accompany some of the Nova topics. Our first collaborative effort, on the death of bees, had received nearly 730,000 views on YouTube in its first week and a half.
This collaboration is already bringing global recognition and international visitors to the Nova website. Keep an eye out for animations about quantum computing and dark energy!
Nova obtains its credibility by having scientists review or contribute to topics in their area of expertise. If you're interested in collaborating, the Nova team would love to hear from you. Contributors are credited on the website, so this can be a great way to raise your profile and become more involved in science communication.
A bit further down the track Nova will also be launching a blog about, well, pretty much anything to do with science and scientific research. It will include explainers on how Nova topics are put together and guest blogs from scientists.
