Journey out and about in the Universe

November 05, 2012

Take a journey through the immensity of our universe from planet earth to the nearest stars, our Milky Way galaxy, and beyond to the edge of the observable universe, with Professor Richard de Grijs from Peking University.

Professor de Grijs is visiting Australia as part of the Australian Academy of Science’s Selby lecture tour and will be speaking today at the Shine Dome in Canberra.

He will use recent, cutting-edge images, animations and results, informed by the results of his own research to traverse through the cosmos over distances which are beyond the comprehension of most people.

Professor de Grijs’ work focuses on pioneering questions related to star formation and galaxy evolution. For this reason, he is actively involved in current international initiatives to build extremely large telescopes,
30 to 50 metres in diameter, to achieve a quantum leap in discovering answers to these fundamental questions about our universe.

Media are welcome to attend and record the lecture.
