The Academy has welcomed the Australian Government’s National Innovation and Science Agenda as a turning point for science in Australia.

The National Innovation and Science Agenda has 20 initiatives to boost research and innovation, including a science Committee of Cabinet, funding for research infrastructure, restored funding for CSIRO and Data61, and funding support for international engagement.

The agenda also provided additional funding for the joint Academy–ATSE initiative, SAGE, as part of a $13 million package to improve gender equity in science.

The Australian Academy of Science’s Secretary for Science Policy Professor Les Field said: ‘This new agenda represents a turning point. It means we can grow an economy based on our outstanding science, and which makes the best use of our significant scientific capital’.
