The Academy’s donor boards, housed in the Shine Dome foyer, are being updated prior to the upcoming annual general meeting to reflect philanthropic giving in 2015.

A special thank you to Dr Anna Rickards, and Academy Fellow Professor Terry Speed FAA and Freda Elizabeth Speed, whose ongoing support has now secured their place as members of the Academy’s President's Circle.
The Academy would like to acknowledge the generous gift of Academy Fellow the late Professor Paul Korner AO FAA and Mrs Jennifer Korner.
Professor Korner was inducted into the Academy in 1974. He had a lifelong commitment to scientific research, tackling a number of scientific questions over his career in the fields of exercise physiology, circulatory control and hypertension.
His advice to young scientists included the following:
A lot of young scientists that I know do research because it helps them to get a career job, and that’s not a good approach. On the whole, even if it works out that way, you really want to have something that interests you burningly, and that never should stop.
The Academy will launch its new Annual Giving Program in May this year. The program will give donors more and easier opportunities to support the Academy’s important work in providing school and public science education; awards, exchanges and fellowships; and strategic, evidence-based advice for science in Australia.
Your tax-deductible donations are crucial in assisting us to maintain our momentum. They will allow us to better plan for the future by creating a core foundation of philanthropic support on which new and existing programs can thrive and grow.
The new program will offer donors the option of regular monthly, quarterly or annual payments. Gifts to this program will help provide extraordinary opportunities for learning and discovery, driving change through policy development and advocacy, and showcasing excellence through peer recognition of significant contributions to science. By making a donation to the Academy you will join a distinguished group of Fellows and friends and have a greater impact on the issues you care about.

A grant from the UK Royal Society enabled the Academy to provide travel grants to delegates from Australia, the Pacific Islands and Papua New Guinea to attend the Commonwealth Science Conference which took place in Bangalore, India, on 25–28 November 2014.
The Commonwealth Science Conference aims to celebrate excellence in Commonwealth science, provide opportunities for cooperation between Commonwealth researchers, inspire young scientists and build scientific capacity in developing nations within the Commonwealth.
An opportunity to provide philanthropic support for delegates to attend the conference is coming up in 2017. If you would like to offer your support, or hear more about the initiative, please contact Isobel Griffin at the Academy.
The conference was a fascinating stage to gain and learn about multidisciplinary scientific studies and to know the leading scientists in the Commonwealth. The chosen speakers were of an unparalleled quality and the breadth of topics (from astrophysics, to health in the Caribbean islands) underpinned the excellence in the Commonwealth science and provided inspiration for all the attendees (definitely me)—Delegate to the 2014 Commonwealth Science Conference

The December 2015 speaker was Professor Mary-Anne Williams, one of Robohub’s 25 Women in Robotics You Need to Know About. Professor Williams gave a fascinating talk on the Robot Revolution.
