The call for applications to participate in the 2016 US–Indonesia Kavli Frontiers of Science Symposium has now closed.
The annual Kavli Frontiers of Science Symposium brings together some of the best young scientists to explore exciting advances and opportunities in their fields. This highly interdisciplinary symposium emphasises communication of a wide range of contemporary science topics across the traditional disciplines.
The symposium enables emerging young scientific leaders to become acquainted with their counterparts in other nations in a broad range of disciplines, to stimulate long-term relationships with their peers, and build an international network of scientific communication and cooperation. The symposium also informs these young scientists about the challenges and opportunities being addressed at the frontiers of other scientific disciplines.
The symposium is jointly sponsored by the US National Academy of Sciences and The Kavli Foundation.
The Australian Academy of Science invites applications from Australian early- and mid-career researchers (EMCRs) to participate in the 2016 US–Indonesia Kavli Frontiers of Science Symposium. The topics to be discussed this year include:
The event will be held in Malang, East Java, Indonesia from 1-4 August 2016 and will include a three-day symposium as well as relevant cultural site visits and social networking opportunities. Approximately 70 young scientists from the US and Indonesia—including leading researchers from the academic, industry and government sectors—will also take part.
The Australian delegation will comprise up to 10 EMCRs. One member of the delegation, an expert in big data and marine conservation, may be invited to deliver a presentation at the symposium. The remaining members of the delegation will be encouraged to present posters during the poster presentation session. Note that the event format encourages informal collective and one-on-one discussions among participants.
Candidates should be research active in any of the six topics listed above.
There are no break-out sessions at this symposium; all presentations are delivered in a plenary setting, therefore it is encouraged that nominating EMCRs have a general interest across all six topics.
The candidate must:
Up to 10 successful applicants from Australia will be selected to participate in the US–Indonesia Kavli Frontiers of Science Symposium. Participation costs will be covered and include:
Participants will be required to submit a report providing comprehensive details of all collaborative research activities and findings undertaken following the symposium.
Applications are considered carefully by a selection committee with diverse expertise convened by the Academy. The decisions of the committee are based on the assessed competitiveness of the proposal. The Academy is not able to enter into discussion or correspondence regarding the reasons why an application is successful or not.
