American graduate students experience research in Australia

June 11, 2013

The Australian Academy of Science is pleased to welcome 20 American graduate students to Australia for the 2013 East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes (EAPSI) program, co-managed by the Academy and the United States National Science Foundation.

The EAPSI program provides US graduate students in science and engineering first-hand experience of conducting research in Australian laboratories.

Among the Australian hosts this year are Academy Fellows Professor Bob Williamson (NICTA), Professor David Craik (University of Queensland) and Professor Marilyn Renfree (The University of Melbourne).

The Academy has also organised a series of lectures and site visits to cultural institutions as part of the orientation program in Canberra for the participants. Highlights include presentations from Academy Fellow and Nobel Laureate Professor Brian Schmidt and Professor Bill Gammage of The Australian National University.

Professor Schmidt was born in America and is looking forward to acting as an ambassador for science research in Australia.

“Australia has provided me so many fantastic opportunities in my area of research and I’m looking forward to inspiring others to explore the prospects of working in this great country,” Professor Schmidt said.

The students will get a chance to mingle with Academy Fellows, the Public Affairs Councillor from the US Embassy and former EAPSI participants now working in Australia, during a dinner at the Shine Dome in Canberra.

The program is funded by the US National Science Foundation and the Australian Government Department of Industry, Innovation, Climate Change, Science, Research and Tertiary Education
