A new primary school curriculum unit about the many challenges faced by Australian farmers has been launched today by Former Governor General Major General Michael Jeffery AC at Wanniassa Hills Primary School in Canberra.
The new unit for year six students is the latest from the Academy of Science’s successful Primary Connections program and will help students to understand issues such as rising salinity, farm management and the impact of changing weather patterns on our ability to produce food.
Executive Director of Primary Connections, David Kellock said students were encouraged to discover recent innovations in farming practice through practical, hands-on activities that involve examining plant growth and health.
“Our units are all linked to the Australian Curriculum, and Rising Salt is particularly important for the future of the Australian farming industry.”
“Rising salt also includes a technology focus, as students are asked to plan and design an irrigation system or water trough to decrease water loss,” he said.
