The Academy facilitates Australia’s access to global science and technology, promotes strategic partnerships between Australian and overseas researchers, and contributes Australian expertise and leadership in regional and global science networks.
The Academy is responsible for Australia’s representation on the International Science Council, as well as relevant international scientific unions and interdisciplinary bodies that convene scientists across disciplinary boundaries to coordinate research to address issues of global significance. The Academy is an active member of the InterAcademy Partnership, an organisation of more than 140 national, regional and global member academies that work together to support the vital role of science in seeking evidence-based solutions to the world’s most challenging problems. It is a founding member of the Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia.
The Academy is the national member of the G20 countries that provide scientific advice for the annual summits of heads of state and government. This group of academies is known as the S20. See details of this year’s meeting and past statements. The Academy is also invited on occasions to endorse science-based recommendations of the national academies of the G7 countries.
The Academy is a member of the science academies of Commonwealth countries and sends delegates from Australia to participate in the Commonwealth Science Conferences. These academies draw attention to important global matters to be discussed at the Commonwealth Heads of Government meetings (CHOGM).
Every year, the Academy supports a delegation of early- and mid-career researchers from Australia to attend the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings and the Falling Walls Labs in Berlin.
