In 2003 the world celebrated the success of the billion-dollar project to map the entire human genome. 15 years later, the ability to rapidly and cheaply sequence DNA combined with advances in ICT for massive data analysis promise to transform our approach to health, agriculture and the environment. In tandem, recent breakthroughs in gene editing technology have opened the door to a new era of genetic improvements that could improve animal and human health and agricultural yields, and reduce the impact of invasive species.
