As part of the SIEF-AAS Fellowships to the Lindau Nobel Laureates Meetings, candidates are sent on several days of site visits at German research institutions and companies. These site visits are used to demonstrate how German research works and how it is commercialised. Through the site visits, each stage of the research and development is highlighted, from basic research, to spin-off company, to world-wide corporations or large-scale manufacturing. The tour also offers opportunities to network, through organised events where the work of the young Australian scientists is showcased to local researchers in their field. Following an event such as this, one young Australian scientist reported “I was able to start two new collaborations as well as catching up with a current collaborator, which allowed me to extend our project”. The aim of these site visits is to establish collaborations and gain insights that the group can bring back to Australia and incorporate into their own work.
