Dr R. H. Frater is distinguished internationally for his research on advanced electronic systems for observational radio astronomy and particularly for innovative image-synthesis techniques developed for the University of Sydney's Fleurs Synthesis Telescope.
Later as Chief of the CSIRO Division of Radiophysics, Dr. Frater had overall responsibility for the design and construction of the Australia Telescope. The great success of this complex synthesis instrument is due mainly to the many technical innovations which he introduced and to his outstanding leadership of this important scientific project. Dr. Frater also played a major role in the transfer to Australian industry of technologies developed within the Division.
