Michael George Cowling has established an international reputation in the field of harmonic analysis, particularly for his solution to the KunzeStein phenomenon, for his innovative use of imaginary powers of operators to prove pointwise convergence results, for his work with Uffe Haagerup on completely bounded multipliers of the von Neumann algebra of a semisimple Lie group of real rank one, and for his study of the asymptotic behaviour of oscillatory integrals. His work is characterised by a combination of the fine skills of a classical analysist with the penetrating insight of an abstract structuralist.
