Distinguished for his service to Australia for many years as Prime Minister, Mr. Menzies played a notable part in the foundation of the Academy, both by facilitating the arrangements for the granting of the Royal Charter and by providing the necessary financial support. By setting up the Committee on Australian Universities and by implementing in full its proposals, he has made a signal contribution to the advancement of Science in Australia.
Under his leadership there have been substantial advances in science and technology in Australia arising, for example, from the establishment of or continued support for such activities as the Atomic Energy Commission, the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme, and the Australian National University.
