During the past 50 years he has been an outstanding contributor to knowledge in the field of Geography, Geomorphology, Anthropology, Glaciology and Geology.
Author of 17 books and joint author of 20 others as well as author of 140 memoirs. Included among these are text books on phases of Geography. Certain of his works have been translated into several foreign languages. He was a leading member of the Scientific Staff of Captain Scott's 1911-12 Antarctic Expedition.
It is to his credit that he initiated and developed the first Department of Geography in an Australian University (Sydney). He has an international reputation. Before taking over head of Department of Geography at Ottawa was Professor of Geography at Chicago University.
