scienceXart: food for thought, supporters are the Australian Academy of Science's National Committee for Nutrition; Dieticians Australia; and the International Year of Fruits and Vegetables 2021
 

To celebrate the United Nations declared International Year of Fruits and Vegetables, the Australian Academy of Science’s National Committee for Nutrition is hosting scienceXart: food for thought, an art competition for primary school students. The 2021 challenge is supported by Dietitians Australia, the leading voice of nutrition in Australia. Dietitians Australia represents more than 7500 nutrition and dietetic professionals all striving to build healthier communities.

Open for entries from 1 to 31 August 2021, the competition engaged students with the creativity of nutrition science.

We received hundreds of entries from primary school students all around Australia. The judging panel and Academy shortlisting team enjoyed the creative and nutritional plates that combined science and art.

Foundation/Prep/Kindergarten

Name: Summer. Winner. Every day at school we eat healthy because fruit and vegetables make us grow. I eat bananas and healthy fruit because it is yummy.
Name: Emily. Highly Commended. Every day at school after Spalding, we have a fruit and veggie break. We eat veggies and fruit because it is healthy for you and it helps you feel strong.
Name: Fleur. Highly Commended. Every day at school we have fruit and veggie break. It keeps us healthy and it makes us strong and we do not eat treats. I love kiwi because it is sour and I love sour.
Name: Stella. Shortlist. They grow in farmis gardin and in pipols gardin eis well. you can grow all difrint froots. the froots in the ranbow are hethee to. My frayvrit froot is appol.

Year 1 to year 2

Name: Ellie. Winner. The meal I designed for my mum. This plate includes grain- wholemeal toasts which provide fibre, vitaminB, minerals for body. Salmon is a good protein resource that gives body good nutrition for growth and maintenance of tissues, also provides energy. Vegetables and fruits are mum’s favourite foods, they have fibre to keep digestive system healthy. Also they provide vitamins A, C and K as well as folic acid to support body. Milk gives calcium to support bones. The most important food for our daily life is water, it is a key to make our body works normally.
Name: Mia. Shortlist. My breakfast is a plate of champions. It has yogurt, eggs, cucumber, avocados, olives and tomato. Yogurt is dairy that keeps you healthy and makes you strong. It can protect your teeth and bones and help prevent digestive problems. Olives also help keep your bones strong and they taste so yummy. Eggs and Bacon are protein and helps make your heart stronger. The tomatoes and cucumbers are important vegetables that fill your body with good nutrients and keeps you hydrated. Finally, avocados are great and help lower cholesterol and gives you important vitamins for your body.
Name: Alexia. Shortlist. I think this breakfast is heathy because it includes all the food groups with fruit, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy and was designed for my growing brother. The plate includes wholemeal pancakes cooked in olive oil, yoghurt, bacon plus fruit including grapes, strawberries, kiwifruit and blueberries. The fresh juice is made from watermelon, orange, carrot and celery. The eggs and bacon provide protein good for muscles, the fruit and vegetables provide vitamins and minerals, the yoghurt provides calcium to help his bones stay strong and the wholemeal flour has fibre good for his digestive system. He loved it !
Name: Isadora. Shortlist. A healthy lunch plate for my favourite Olympian - Emma McKeon. The foods I chose and why: Fruit - raspberries, mandarins and blueberries are high in Vitamin C which helps your immune system. Vegetables - carrot is high in Vitamin A which is good for your bones. Celery has potassium and avocado has good fats which are good for your heart. Protein - smoked salmon will held build muscle. Grain - grain bread has carbohydrate for energy.. Dairy - milk and cheese have calcium for strong bones. This healthy lunch plate will help Emma swim even faster!

Year 3 to Year 4

Name: Arabella. Winner. I created a fun, healthy plate using mainly organic and whole foods and based on the strategy of eating all the colours of the rainbow. My aim was to get a maximum variety of nutrients and minerals into a balanced meal in a memorable and fun way. I hope it inspires you to eat a rainbow and eat more healthily. Remember, you are what you eat!
Name: Giaan. Highly commended. Fish is not necessarily everyone's favorite but I am sure we love strawberries and apples. Wouldn’t it be nice if fish tasted like strawberry and apple? Which I have used to make my fish, the brightness of red from strawberries makes the scales look beautiful and delicious instead of plain grey. My fish will make every child want to eat fish.
Name: Olivie. Highly commended. My underwater sea world has a Banana for the sand/ground, the banana peel as octopus, capsicum for the crab, strawberries for claws. The octopus has found a treasure chest made out of strawberries. The broccoli is the coral with sea urchins as blueberries. There is seaweed in my work made of cut baby cos leaves. All my food is healthy, it has lots of vitamins and minerals.I love fruit and vegetables and i ate it all up. This helps me grow and stay strong. We all should eat healthy/fresh food every day. Sugar and chocolate would make it unhealthy.

Name: Anastasia. Shortlist. TYPE 1 DIABETIC LUNCHBOX FOR GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT. Crunching on delicious fruit and veggies for energy. Munching on proteins (chicken and cheese) for muscle growth and bonus energy from healthy fats. This is a meal any child would devour . . . even non-diabetics! The only difference is A bolus dose of insulin is administered upfront to compensate for a non-functioning pancreas to process 10g of Carbohydrates in this lunchbox. Improvements that can be made are including grains to have a complete five food group lunch. Also, a chocolate square can be substituted for popcorn and prosciutto for wholegrain.
Name: Abdurrahman. Shortlist. Food For Thought Healthy Plate Project. My meal is for lunch. I recommend it to be for lunch because it has a lot of nutrition. So if you have it a little early it will give you power for the whole day. My meal has whole grain pasta, cheese, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, broccoli, fish, egg, blue berries, coconut, dates and mixed nuts. I think my meal is really healthy because it has majority of vitamins and minerals such as vitamin A, B, C, D, E and K. My meal also has Omega-3 fatty acids, iron, copper, manganese and magnesium.
Name: Lexie. Shortlist. In this picture I have used real food to design a frog pond and a garden. There are two frogs in the pond, a tree, a flower, a butterfly, bushes, and some weeds growing through the dirt. I have used fruit, vegetables, protein, and carbohydrates. The frogs and the pond are made using blueberries, strawberries, and apple. The flower is made using grapes and strawberries. The butterfly is made using carrot and tomato. My tree is made from banana and kiwi fruit. My dirt is made of almonds and puffed rice, the weeds are peas, and the bushes are broccoli.

Year 5 to Year 6

Name: Oceana. Winner. I decided to make a nice, fitting lunch having a medium rare cooked steak with a few slices of tomatoes which can also help your cells from being damaged. There is also cooked asparagus having vitamin C, K and A! For the sides, we have cooked spinach and cooked corn. Corn having vitamin C, and spinach having vitamin E.
Name: William. Winner. I chose the before and after of an apple because part of my daily diet is 2 or 3 apples ( sorry they taste amazing) and they have 6 different vitamins and minerals including vitamin c vitamin b6 vitamin k manganese copper and potassium they extent that I eat them may be a bit unhealthy but it's worth it to get the sweet sweet taste of an apple every day. Apples are my favourite fruit and it is a good source of energy and vitamins that is why I chose to draw an apple before and after.
Name: Georgianna. Higly commended. FUSSY EATERS. Munching into an omega-3 filled tuna grained sandwich, whilst chomping crunchy carrot curls, the clown’s red Rudolph tomato nose illuminates. The mouth watering cucumber bow-tie compliments the dairy rich, wide-eyed and cheesy smile! No hidden veggies . . . and a heap of protein, carbohydrates and good fats! As a variety of food is key in designing a fun and appetising dish, this nutritious clown entices these little fussy eaters to gobble up their five food groups for their growing, developing and energetic bodies. Removing one or more of these food groups would decrease the nutritional value.
Name: Joe. Shortlist. The broccoli tree is a good source of protein, fiber, iron, potassium, calcium, selenium and magnesium. It also contains the vitamins A, C, E and K. The hummus on the tree can lower your cholesterol and improve your bone, skin and muscle health. The oat river can lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels, protect against skin irritation and reduce constipation. The carrots have calcium and vitamin K and can also keep blood sugar levels under control. The green beans are also high in vitamin k and contain a decent amount of calcium, while onions and pumpkin seeds contain fiber.
Name: Aimee. Shortlist. Smoothie Bowl. Bananas are a healthy source of fiber, potassium, vitamin B6 and vitamin C. Frozen berries are rich in antioxidants, vitamins C, A, and the phytonutrients available in berries can help protect cells against damage from disease-linked free radicals. Granola provides protein and nutrients like iron, vitamin D, folate, and zinc. A good serving varys from 1/4 cup to a full cup depending on what is in it. Granola can also be an excellent source of Vitamins B, C, E, Phosphoru, Potassium and Calcium. A Smoothie bowl is a quick, easy and healthy snack.
Name: Angus. Shortlist. The foods i included where yogurt banana strawberry passion fruit honey oatmeal. GeorgiannaI designed this plate for my sister. It contains dairy which is the calcium for your bones, fruit is also a healthy option. This plate of food is moderately healthy. I could make it healthier by using greek yogurt instead of sweetened yogurt. Other things I could consider is how much they would eat, if the weather is hot or cold, what they like and if the person has any allergies.
Name: Isabella. Shortlist. My plate includes a variety of foods. Apples are rich in fibre, vitamins, and minerals. Oranges have Vitamin C. Potassium rich bananas help the Circulatory System deliver oxygen to the brain. Vitamin K in lettuce helps strengthen the bones. Blueberries are packed with antioxidants. Red foods help with mood, heart, memory and sleep, orange help with eyes and joints, yellow help with joints, eyes and mood, green give energy and help lungs, skin, teeth, bones and sleep, blue help your blood health, digestive system and urinary tract health while purple assists blood health, digestive system, and urinary tract health.
