Dr Graeme Moad AC FAA FTSE FRS was one of two Australian scientists elected this year to the Royal Society, the oldest scientific academy in continuous existence.
Academy Fellow Distinguished Professor Jenny Graves is well known for her work on animal genomes, the evolution of sex and sex chromosomes. But she’s also an experienced choral singer.
“Every time I perform in Joseph Haydn’s 1798 masterpiece, The Creation, I wonder why we are still singing about Adam and Eve, when there’s so much wonderful science to sing about,” Professor Graves said.

The following is a transcript of a press conference given by the President, Professor Chennupati Jagadish AC PresAA FREng FTSE and Chief Executive, Anna-Maria Arabia of the Australian Academy of Science, in response to the pardon of Kathleen Folbigg announced earlier today.
Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science Professor Doug Hilton AO has been named as the new chief executive of Australia’s national science agency.
Professor Hilton, a molecular and cellular biologist who was elected to the Academy in 2004, will begin the role at CSIRO on 29 September.
This month we witnessed a historic moment for science, with the pardon of Kathleen Folbigg after she had spent 20 years in prison.
Between 10 and 12 May, 300 delegates representing the global scientific community met in Paris as part of the International Science Council’s Capitalizing on Synergies in Science mid-term meeting of members.
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scientist Award recognises research in the physical and biological sciences, allowing interdisciplinary and sociocultural research that could straddle the social sciences and humanities, by outstanding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander PhD students and early- and mid-career scientists.
Awards will be for up to A$20,000, with additional support provided to attend the Academy's biennial Science at the Shine Dome event.
