On 31 January 2024, the Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) made a joint submission to the inquiry into the Defence Trade Controls Amendment Bill 2023 (Provisions).
The submission strongly urges that the Bill not be progressed until there has been genuine debate and discussion of its implications on the Australian research sector. It also recommends a fundamental research exemption in the Bill and measures to mitigate unintended consequences on research and development, among others.
