The Academy is a board member of the InterAcademy Council (IAC). From 28–30 September 2015, the President of the Academy, Professor Andrew Holmes AM PresAA FRS FTSE, and the Academy’s Foreign Secretary, Professor Cheryl Praeger AM FAA, attended the joint session of the IAC Board, the InterAcademy Panel (IAP) Executive Committee and the InterAcademy Medical Panel (IAMP) Executive Committee. The meeting was held in New Delhi and hosted by the Indian National Science Academy (INSA).
This was the first time Professor Praeger has participated in meetings of the IAC, IAP and IAMP since becoming Foreign Secretary.
The joint session considered the legal aspects of creating the InterAcademy Partnership, which is a new organisation bringing together established global networks of academies of science, medicine and engineering. It strives for collaboration between academies to support the special role of science and its efforts in seeking solutions to the world’s most challenging problems.
There were also reports from the four IAP-affiliated regional networks in Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe. Of interest to the Academy were the report and achievements of the Asian network—the Association of Academies and Societies of Science in Asia. These included workshops on gender issues, food security and global health.
