Early-career scientist to visit United States

Breanne Hobden, winner of a scholarship to visit the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the US

Early-career researcher Breanne Hobden has been awarded a scholarship to visit the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States later this year. Breanne is a PhD student at the University of Newcastle whose research focuses on depression management for people with comorbid alcohol dependence.

During her six-week visit, Breanne will work with Dr Lorenzo Leggio at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the National Institute on Drug Abuse to research the impact, treatment and outcomes of alcohol use disorder and depression.

Breanne’s visit has been made possible by the Adam J Berry Memorial Fund, established in memory of a young Australian scientist. The fund pays travel expenses for one young Australian scientist each year to work at an NIH institute for up to 13 weeks. In return, they are expected to make a contribution to the research program of the institute they are visiting. The fund is co-managed by the Academy and the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health.
