Professor Jean Bernard is the most distinguished haematologist in the world and the best known and most influential scientist in France. He is also a man of literary distinction, recognised by his election to the Academy francaise in 1975. He has been awarded the States highest honours and is a Grand Officer de la Legion d'Honneur and has the Grand Croix de l'ordre National du Merite. He has written 10 major books on science, philosophy and public affairs and published more than 1000 scientific papers. Professor Bernard has been responsible for the development of the cultural exchange agreement with the Australian Academy of Science and is a powerful advocate of Australian-French scientific relations. He has visited Australia on a number of occasions representing the French Academy at our 25th Jubilee celebrations. Many of Australia's leading clinical haematologists and scientists have studied in Jean Bernard's laboratories at the Hospital St Louis where some of the most important contributions to the treatment of leukaemic diseases in humans have been made.
