Image Description
Professor Ajay Sood is a pre-eminent physicist, internationally renowned for his discoveries in both hard and soft condensed matter. His extraordinarily diverse contributions, ranging from flow-induced energy generation in carbon nanotubes to bacteria-driven stochastic heat engines, have arisen from a combination of elegant experimentation and theoretical modelling. He has initiated several contemporary research areas including confined and interface phonons in superlattices, and in situ Raman studies of graphene and other 2D material devices having potential applications in device metrology and semiconductor technology. His landmark contributions to soft and active matter include the discovery of instabilities under shear flow (now called rheochaos) and emergence of flocking in active granular matter. The originality, diversity, significance and breadth of Professor Sood’s contributions are truly exceptional.
