Emeritus Professor John Long is Australia's pre-eminent palaeontologist. He has made fundamental discoveries about the early stages of vertebrate evolution. His fieldwork in Australia, Antarctica, Africa, Iran and East Asia enabled description of 90 new fossil taxa including new kinds of ancient fishes, the discovery of world’s oldest reptile tracks and Australia’s oldest theropod dinosaur. In addition to high-profile research and authoring major textbooks, his promotion of science and engagement of the public, including through popular books, is outstanding.
