Image Description
Professor Stefan Maier is an experimental physicist renowned for his pioneering studies in nanophotonics, plasmonics and nanophotonic materials. He has conducted groundbreaking experiments to understand and tailor light-matter interactions below the diffraction limit of light with a particular focus on the guiding, localisation and conversion of electromagnetic energy with metallic nanoparticles. Professor Maier has shaped the development of the research field of plasmonics and its interdisciplinary applications in biosensing, optoelectronics and energy conversion. He extended key nanophotonic concepts to the infrared and provided first demonstrations of designer nanoscale mid-infrared resonators via localised surface phonon polaritons. Professor Maier has an outstanding track record for international and national scientific service and the mentoring and advancement of young scientists and disadvantaged communities.
