Mr Essington Lewis CH FAA was an industrialist whose career shaped both Broken Hill Proprietary Company (BHP) and Australia's wartime industrial capacity.

Essington Lewis 1881-1961

Essington Lewis (1881–1961) rose from student miner to Chairman of BHP over more than five decades, shaping the company into Australia's leading steel producer. During the Second World War he served as Director-General of both Munitions and Aircraft Production, overseeing much of the nation's wartime manufacturing effort. He was created a Companion of Honour in 1943 and elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 1954.
