Rüdiger Wehner is one of the most distinguished contemporary scientists in the field of animal navigation. Using the Saharan desert ant Cataglyphis as a model, he has had unparalleled success in unravelling the mechanisms that guide the search for food and the return to the nest. He has elucidated the nature of the celestial compass, the structure of searching strategies and the use of landmarks for visual guidance. Alongside his work in the lab, during four decades he has performed field work in the Saharan and Namibian Deserts and in central Australia. Wehner’s interest in navigation in arid, featureless landscapes has led him to develop a productive collaboration with Dr Ken Cheng, of Macquarie University, to study animal navigation in the Australian desert. For several years, Wehner was Adjunct Professor at Macquarie University, Sydney.

John Spence is internationally recognised and acclaimed for his contributions to the development and application of X-ray lasers to biology and molecular movies, to atomic-resolution electron microscopy, and to the development of new microscopies and spectroscopies which have given scientists new eyes to understand atomic processes in solids. By conceiving the diffraction-before-destruction X-ray laser experiments on protein nanocrystals, Spence and Chapman opened the way to a new damage-free method of protein crystallography. Spence's work with Zuo in electron diffraction has provided the clearest images of chemical bonds between atoms, which control the arrangement of atoms in matter, and so determine its properties.

Professor Boyer has made major contributions to present day knowledge of the mechanisms by which plants respond to water stress or salinity, subjects of considerable scientific interest and economic importance to Australia. He has developed new methods of measuring plant water potentials, discovered osmotic adjustment in dehydrating plants and growth-induced water potentials in rapidly growing plants, and determined many of the primary signals controlling plant enzyme activities when drought occurs. He has actively participated in cooperative and continuing projects with Australian colleagues over several decades and has had a profound effect on Australian research in these areas.

Professor Bai has made many important contributions in developing new research techniques and methodologies, and applying them in research in to chemistry and molecular sciences. In particular, he is recognised as one of the pioneers in the field of scanning probe microscopy, nanoscience and nanotechnology, and has conducted unique investigations into the behaviours of single molecule and molecular assembly on solid surfaces, leading to the development of various nano-products or processes. He also plays a strong leadership role in advancing science and technology in China, and has made many contributions to promote the scientific and technological cooperation between Australia and China.

Bruce Stillman

Bruce Stillman is internationally recognized as the leader in the fields of DNA replication and chromatin inheritance. He discovered many of the DNA replication proteins that copy the genomes of eukaryotic cells and discovered the Origin Recognition Complex that initiates the process of duplicating chromosomes at origins of DNA replication. These studies led to a deep understanding of how chromosome duplication is regulated. He also discovered Chromatin Assembly Factor-1 that assembles histones onto the newly replicated DNA to form chromatin. He advises a number of Australian universities and research institutes and has an ongoing collaboration with a Sydney-based biotechnology company.
